The queen of hotel design: Kit Kemp

Kit Kemp drew an inspired crowd recently in Regent Street’s Anthropologie, sharing her top tips for interior styling and promoting her new book, “Every Room Tells A Story”.

Her presence and passion lit up the room of design enthusiasts, much like her vibrant signature style.

Whilst she has collaborated with a host of designers, makers and artists in her career, Kit is perhaps best known for her impressive Firmdale Hotels business, a portfolio of luxury boutique hotels spanning London and New York.

Kit’s style is one with which I define as aspirational. She is a maximalist; her designs an eclectic mix of colour, texture, pattern and print.

It’s not an easy look to pull off and yet each of her spaces works like a harmonious symphony, with just the right dose of energy.

Her hotel designs bring an inspired energy; an exciting sense of escapism that aligns naturally with the idea of travel and journey.

With so many people afraid to use colour in their wardrobes and homes, it’s no wonder she is admired by many.

There is more than meets the eye with Kit’s designs however and it’s these elements that are most exciting.

She is a storyteller with a vivid, whimsical imagination, and this is channelled through her designs.

Each piece of fabric, each print, each detail has its own narrative, whether it be something hand-picked on Kit’s travels, or something hand-made exclusively for the space.

She has a flair for reinvention; for giving existing objects a new life or using them in unique, unconventional ways.

For Soho’s Ham Yard Hotel, Kit created a wall feature out of an eclectic selection of bowling shoes, framed in Perspex boxes.

For a residential villa in Barbados, Kit not only used her signature mix of fabrics for furnishings and cushions – she framed a vibrant collection of fabrics from the 1920’s in mirror as a striking wall piece.

Her attention to detail reflects not only her knack for intricacy, but also the genuine love and considered care that goes into each of her designs – “a room should make you sit down and want to stay”.

It’s a combined balance of comfort and simple luxury –  “I won’t use a fabric that you can’t sit on in the nude”, Kit insists.

Nevertheless, let’s hope there aren’t too many out there who sprawl themselves over her beautiful furnishings, sans clothes.
