Pantone Colour of the Year 2016

Pantone.com

2016 is now here, and as we both reflect on the year passed and look optimistically to the year ahead, Pantone share with us the Pantone Colour of The Year 2016.

While it’s common knowledge that different colours affect our mood, Pantone, the world’s colour system experts, delve a little deeper.

Each year, they reflect on the years’ movements in culture, style and attitudes, to determine a symbolic colour that captures these elements and paves the way for the following year.

The Pantone Colour of The Year 2016 is a dual selection of two hues – “Rose Quartz” – a soft, blush pink, and “Serenity”, a pale, powder blue.

Pantone predict we’ll be catching many glimpses of these colours across fashion, interiors and beauty in 2016.

On a less aesthetic note, these hues are a harmonious combination that reflect balance, inner peace and tranquillity – qualities that are paramount for our wellbeing as both individuals and collectively.

While traditionally, pink and blue have been associated with female and male respectively, this fusion of Rose Quartz and Serenity is a harmonious play on tradition and gender-association. 2015 saw a welcome, liberal approach to gay marriage in many parts of the world.

Where long-steeped tradition has, until now, overruled human emotion, freedom of choice and personal value, such places have broken down the discriminative barriers and allowed couples of all genders to celebrate their love through marriage.

2015 saw further movements towards gender neutrality, as the prominence of the transgender community grew.

With more media coverage showing individuals transforming themselves and their lives as transgenders, this community has been a catalyst for broadening minds and reiterating the importance of respect and acceptance of all individuals.

Tragically, the year was punctured with numerous atrocities as a result of extremism. Both harmony and serenity are channelled through Pantone’s selected colours, reminding us of the importance of such qualities in our daily lives.

Perhaps now really is the best time for us to embrace such qualities, as we embark on the highs and lows of the year ahead.
