I must admit… being a life-long non-smoker, I’m forever one of those ‘tutters’ if found stuck behind a smoker; the pungent, polluted substance blowing straight back behind them and into my face. I have however been known, at this time of the year, to make wrongful accusations. Scrunching my face up at the supposed stream of cigarette smoke from one’s mouth, only to discover it’s simply the visible breath that emerges from us all as the temperatures begin, slowly but surely, to plummet.
Despite the obvious chilly discomfort, a sense of festive thrill always grows in me come December. We immerse ourselves in the flurry of Christmas parties, obligatory pre-Christmas catch-ups, tree shopping, food shopping and scouring the stores for gifts for the masses. We become consumer slaves to the world of retail, all in the name of jolly, festive fun.
It’s become apparent to me over the years however that during this process of gift guide scouring, list making and present searching for all our loved ones, I often find more for myself in the process. “Hmm, I know he was after some new snowboarding gear, but would he really prefer this sage, silk floor lamp under the tree instead…?’ A host of post-rationalising (and frankly, absurd) thoughts creep in.
So this year, I’ve comprised my own Christmas Wish List – a selection of interior-based desirables I may just have to treat myself to… if only to brighten the day when the dull, grey winter skies fail to.
Rothschild & Bickers Retro Pendant Light
I love the unexpected contrast of stark, smoky grey glass and warming copper in this pendant lamp. The hourglass curves add to its elegance and the reflections through the glass’ bevelled edges appear to create, stunning, shimmering reflections.
Ory metallic cow-hide coasters
I came across a very similar looking Brazilian cow hide a few years ago and am excited to see this textile crop up again. Ever a lover of unusual material combinations, the contrast of soft hide and metallic accents is just fabulous. It’s a striking combination, so a small home accessory is perfect.
Munna ‘Babe’ velvet armchair
This is everything I love in an armchair right now – from the fluid curves to the warm coral velvet and the hint of copper detail on the feet. A vibrant addition to a living space otherwise filled with soft, muted wintery tones.
Iona marble + wood cheeseboard
A self-confessed cheese lover, such a vice became all the more justified in my head when I spotted this gorgeous cheese board – to serve (and consume) in style. I love the abstract combination of hand cut marble and mango wood, and the sharp geometric shape – replicating the shape of cheese wedges soon to sit atop.
Cashmere Rib Collection cashmere throw
No fabric comes close to being the equivalent of a warn hug in winter than cashmere. This ribbed throw in a natural stone hue is understated and a luxurious, much desired addition to my bed for ultimate comfort this season.
Starck Misa Joy base chair
This chair has me leaping ahead to thoughts of summer, but no matter. The glossy acrylic and pop of soft pink colour will liven up the dark, moody corners where charcoals dominate, or make a feature as a group in the garden. Balmy evenings may be a surreal distance away, but these chairs bring thoughts of everything sunny, fun and vibrant to the surface of my mind.
